How to Get Away with Murder more or less solved the homicide of the title, but will face a similar problem as Empire in keeping the same stories fresh for another 13 episodes. Glee suffered a similar problem, adding so many characters and complicated scenarios that it quickly became unwatchable. Revenge ruined itself because it couldn’t find a way to expand its central plot without becoming ludicrous. Many shows that go at such a breakneck pace find themselves in trouble after the first season. What it boils down to is that the company went public, Lucious named Jamal his heir, and then he lost everything to Cookie, Hakeem and Andre.

When you think about all the back and forth of this season, the lovers that have come and gone, the secret children that have arrived and been dispensed with, the story didn’t really move all that much. It’s the soapiest thing on television, but it’s burning through plot faster than guest star Courtney Love tears through a pack of cigarettes. That is one of the biggest challenges that Empire will face in season two. But just to prove my point, he was beaten by a parent in both the first and final episodes of the season. How many times this season was the IPO threatened? How many times did Lucious and Jamal get mad at each other and make up? And how many temper tantrums is Hakeem (Bryshere Y Gray) going to throw before someone punches him in the face? Oh wait, that already happened. Just like the ride, this show moves quickly, but repeatedly revisits the same territory. Empire is more like that whiplash ride at the carnival, where the cars go in circles again and again, flinging passengers against the side of the cart. A roller coaster goes from A to B – however dramatically. I would call it a roller-coaster ride, but that wouldn’t be really accurate. Oh, and she murdered someone.Īnd let us not forget about Cookie (Taraji P Henson) who started a relationship, ended it, was escorted out of Empire’s offices by security twice, got in a fist fight with Boo-Boo Kitty (Grace Gealey), and was fired and rehired from the concert she was putting together for Lucious multiple times. Things were even crazier for Andre (Trai Byers) who found God, lost him, found Jennifer Hudson, lost her, broke up with his wife Rhonda (Kaitlin Doubleday), and then got back together with her. Jamal (Jussie Smollet) made up with his father, wrote a song with him, held a rival over a balcony railing à la Suge Knight, and then was given the keys to the Empire. (And this article is going to contain more spoilers than Cookie has purple furs, so if you haven’t watched the episode yet, you should bail now.) Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard) took his company public, then lost it in a hostile takeover, and then was arrested for the murder he committed in the pilot. A lot sure happened on the final episode of Empire, which quickly became one of the top-rated shows on television after its January premiere.
